First Generation

Why First Generation

A first generation cross is the breeding of one purebred dog to another purebred dog of a different breed, this is usually significantly different gene pools to obtain the differentiator in a First Generation offpsring. For example, breeing Toy Poodle x Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a much bigger differentiation thanToy Poodle x Standard Poodle. We are not endeavouring to develop a ‘new breed’ of dog. The names ‘Cavoodle’ or its US counterpart ‘Cavapoo’ came about because it’s a shorter way of saying ‘Cavalier King Charles Spaniel cross with a Toy Poodle’. All ‘pure’ bred dogs came about from selectively breeding for traits deemed valuable in the particular breed. The way in which purebred dogs have developed and ‘fine’tuned’ is to continue breeding close lines to get the particular attributes that associations were looking for. This means that the gene pools of pure-bred dogs have similar profiles.
1st-gen

By crossing one current-day purebred dog with another, you have the benefit of hybrid vigour. This means the chance of having puppies with the common genetic diseases in their pure breed mix is significantly reduced. Again, our aim is not to create another ‘breed’ of dog.

Aside from this, as our aim is to breed the healthiest pups with the advantages of both purebred parents, minus the potential health issues, breeding First Generation puppies with the way we achieve this.

Predictability In A First Generation Designer Dog

We have been breeding dogs for over 15 years and many people comment that our pups have a particular ‘look’ about them which is highly sought after. This comes from careful selection and consideration of parent dogs. We have good knowledge and experience to predict what combinations will result in a particular ‘look’.
We do not 100% guarantee a low or no shed coat in our Spoodles or Cavoodles as there can be no guarantees. We can, howeever, provide you with a good indication from our years of experience and feedback as to how coats result. In some instances, we have flat coat ‘oodles’, where the pup has a flat but still non or very low shedding coat, as a rule the non flat coats shed less than the flat coated pups. It is important to note that there is no such thing as a “non-shed” coat, as even breeds like Poodles will still lose some hair, just nowhere near the amount of a dog that has a shedding coat. As a result we reliably have good first generation low shedding coated puppies.
